Down and out in Rotterdam

Ideas, meaning and a mind in motion

About the author

zelfportret

This blog’s title was adapted from Orwell’s ‘Down and out in Paris and London’ a beautifully written autobiographical account of Orwell’s early days with little or no money in London and Paris. Even though I cannot be considered poor, I do often consider myself down and out.

This blog started as a project when I was roaming the streets of Leiden after my graduation and before I found employment. Since, many years down the road I’m writing from Rotterdam. Only the setting has changed, the feeling hasn’t.

I am passionately nostalgic. I have Always been anachronistic in my thoughts, feelings and interests. And sadly, I’ve always felt out of place.

I get my peace reading literature. And if I have a dream left in me, it must be writing like my heroes of the written word. Fiction beats reality and it is true art that comes closest to universal truth.
